with training. Our french is going okay, I suppose. I understand everyone but I can't make sentences using the past and future tense, so I may need to stay in Lome (the capital) a week after swear-in to have one-to-one, all-day sessions with my personal formateur. What I meant in understanding everyone, I don't mean the French. They speak wayyyy to fast for me, but the Togolese speak 100 times slower. This mas it easier for me to buy the essentials (bread, juice, candy, avocados, toilet paper) when I'm in town. The struggle I have with french is that the last consonant is never pronounced (so it seems). However, if I'm trying to get my point across fast, I say the word in Spanish with a slight accent (I know, I already have one) and it seems to work pretty good.
I hope everyone is doing well. We have CNN at my host family's house and we're trying to keep up with the latest news back home. Most websites take a year to load with all the flashy ads, so we can't rely on this method for most of our news.
Some have asked about care package suggestions. Where can I begin? Actually, starting is not the problem, ending is. :)
I'm afraid of checking the site for my address, so I'll just list it again along with our number.

Wow! Sounds like you have a lot going on. I totally understand about the speaking too fast...I feel that way about Spanish! :) I'm going to Germany in late Sept & will start trying to learn some German words/phrases starting tonight...God help me! I'm the worst at learning languages. Hopeless, even. Glad you've at least mastered French to purchase your essentials. How's Tristan doing with the French? Is the address you've provided a permanent one (good for your entire tour)? OK, I've gone on too long. Take care of yourselves. We miss you guys!
Hi Nadia, Hi Tristan,
This is SUNNY! London calling. You visited at the wrong time, but hey I bet Togo is a lot sunnier. You do seem to have a lot going on, but if there are any requests you have for here (sweets from Chinatown etc etc) let us know and I'm sure we can manage to send some stuff over. Oh well, too much typing here, but hope you're pleased with how things have turned out.
A bientôt, mes amis!!
Our address for the next two years will be as listed on the site with the exception of PCT at the end of my name. In late September, that should change to PCV (Volunteer)! Woo-hoo!
Thanks to everyone for their comments. I read every one of them three times. :)
I wish I could say something relevant in French--I am sending a French DVD. I hope it isn't too tragic or too bawdy; that is the trouble with a foreign language film! I'm so proud of you, and I can't wait to read more. I will call tomorrow! Love, MaryAnn
Hello Nadia and Tristan:
I'm sure that with time and practice you two will be totally fluent in French. DFW is hot..hot...lately, it has been between 97 to 99. A small package is on its way to Togo. I hope you enjoy the toffee and coconut candy and to spice your life, some chili powder.
Take care and God bless you two.
Patricia
Hey, girl - I sent you a package on Friday. I'm curious to see how long it takes to find you, but your blank CDs and crayons (do you feel artistic?) and some other goodies are on the way. Inquiring minds, however, want to know what the heck is Japanese candy??
It's hot and miserable here - the usual Fort Worth August. September looms, though, and it sounds cooler whether it is or not!!
Love ya!
Stac
